1. Den Paradera botanical garden, Curacao. Healer Dinah Veeris is on a one-woman crusade to preserve her homeland's threatened, medicinal plants. She is also saving the wisdom of a vanishing generation of healers whose practices are steeped in African and Native American lore. She has opened Den Paradera, a magnificent botanical garden where she propagates over 300 species of wild medicinal plants. Visitors to Curacao can take a walking tour through the garden and learn about healing, rejuvenating and anti-aging herbs and botanicals. Herbal remedies from the island can also be bought as gifts to bring home.
2.Nettles Farm, Lummi Island, San Juan Islands; Washington What: Small Weekend Workshops at Nettles Farm Why: Nettles Farm is making a name for itself as an agro-tourism leader. Becky Seward, who tends to the farm’s colorful rows of produce, overflowing hothouses and boisterous livestock (100 egg-laying chickens, and American pink and Hungarian Mangalista pigs), welcomes visitors to wander about—or sign up for one of the farm’s small weekend workshops that focus on learning practical skills such as turning your backyard chicken into a stewing hen or filleting a whole salmon. Participants can stay overnight on-site in a charming cabin or in a deluxe guest suite right in the farmhouse.
3. Warm Valley Orchard, Orcas Island, San Juan Islands; Washington What: Knit textiles and yarn Why: Maria and Bob Nutt raise the sheep, spin the wool and knit the scarves they sell at their studio – a large, light-filled room in their farmhouse. Here, you’ll find long skeins of yarn and beautifully knit scarves, gloves and shawls, all which begins on the backs of their 20 sheep. Where: Warm Valley Orchard (about a mile from the ferry dock), Orcas Island, San Juan Islands; Washington
4. Café Olga, Orcas Island, San Juan Island; Washington What: Homemade cinnamon rolls at Café Olga Why: Blink and you may miss the tiny town of Olga – it’s little more than a post office and few houses. The fragrance of cinnamon buns lures vistors to this popular breakfast destination. Where: Café Olga (located in an old strawberry packing plant), Orcas Island, San Juan Island; Washington |
