Peter Oxley has a large collection of pictures of matsuri, which is the Japanese word for festival. Most of the matsuri are in the spring and autumn, when the townspeople carry mikoshi, or portable shrines, around the neighbborhood. While chanting "washoi, washoi", the frenzied crowds implore the gods (in the mikoshi) for protection from pestilemce and natural disasters, for fertility, for the promise of a good harvest in the spring, and as thanksgiving for a bountiful one in the autumn, etc.

"Matsuri, Call of the Gods" is an invaluable photographic document that reveals the fabric of Japanese society. At the same time it portrays the individuality of people caught in moments of extraordinary candor. Above all it depicts a centuries-old tradition that is a timeless celebration of life itself.

Peter is looking for a publisher or sponsor who would be interested in making these images into a coffee-table book. A representative sample of which can be seen on his website:
http://www.pbase.com/peteroxley/matsuri

All images are digital and taken with a Canon EOS 1D mark 11. Sponsors, please remember that Tokyo has a good chance of winning the 2016 Olympics!!!

Peter will be spending several months a year in Cambodia (Siem Reap- Angkor) and will be available for assignments/commisions in that part of the world (no wildlife) from mid November onwards. For example, please check out: http://www.pbase.com/peteroxley/angkor
