NEWSLETTER - November 2006

One of the unique strengths of the Photographers Direct service is in finding outstanding cover images, whether for novels, music cds, magazines or corporate reports. As a researcher you may get a vague and wide ranging spec, and for these, image search technology can often prove unreliable and frustrating. At Photographers Direct our photographers get to read and interpret your spec, which results in outstanding successes in many cases. Here are some examples (with cut down specs):

  • A young girl looking at a store window or out at a landscape (novel)

  • A smiling person selling/buying fresh produce in China or India (corporate report)

  • A stained glass window with a dove (music cd)

  • A depressing resort town in the winter with a Ferris wheel (novel)

  • A young boy or girl or both fishing off a dock of a farm pond (magazine)

  • An atmospheric 19th Century city street (novel)

  • A man/cowboy walking along country road / train tracks with acoustic guitar (music cd)

Our photographers know what images they have, and often if they do not have it a few will go out and shoot to fit the spec, adding even more variety and freshness to our collection.
So, if you are having trouble finding images, why not give our Picture Search service a try?

Knaresborough photographer Mark Sunderland is mounting an exhibition of new work in Harrogate this December. Entitled 'Yorkshire Through The Seasons', the exhibition comprises a selection of new images of the Yorkshire Dales, moors and coast taken by Mark over the past year.

Mark, originally from Yorkshire, left to go to university and worked in IT for many years. He turned professional as a landscape and travel photographer in 2004 and moved back to Yorkshire in 2005. He then set about photographing the landscape of his native county with fresh eyes, using the techniques acquired and a style developed over the last decade on journeys to more distant landscapes in the western USA, Patagonia and Iceland. This exhibition is the result of the first year of this project.

The exhibition runs from 11-23 December at The Stairwell Gallery, Harrogate Library, Victoria Avenue, Harrogate, HG1 1EG.

Mark will continue shooting landscape and travel subjects in Northern England and abroad throughout 2007 and is available for travel assignment work.

    Church of Christ ( 1898 ) , Carman , Manitoba , Canada stock photo
Testaments of Faith is a travelling exhibition of 48 photographs. One purpose of its touring is to share some of the results of over 20 years of photographing the fast-disappearing relics of Manitoba's heritage: over 700 pioneer churches. Each image is a tangible record of a historical condition and, as such, one that will never be again. Collectively, the images are a visual reference to a part of history — and to works of art. They are landmarks on both a permanent spiritual landscape and a constantly changing physical one.

Yet, Tyrrell Mendis' photographs are not just documentation of rotting wood and crumbling stone but an examination of the premise, the process and the project - in each instance different, in some instances unique, and in all instances significant. They are an attempt to capture — and preserve — the spirit of each site as a two-dimensional extrapolation of an abstract concept: the motivation for creating an expression of faith.

Tyrrell's web site has several other images that include places of worship from around the world.
