Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, formerly part of Czechoslovakia, is an enticing mixture of a historic Danube-side Old Town, coupled with some typically Soviet style architecture dating from the Cold War era. The Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, has a magnificent city centre and lies about an hour to the south of Slovenia's beautiful Lake Bled. International Photobank have launched a brand new website after six months intensive preparation by Peter Baker and his business partner Gary Goodwin of the selection and modification of images for the site, and clients can now quickly search for specific pictures from a collection of 15,000 images on the web for their travel picture requirements. The site has full lightbox facilities and once registered and set up with access by a chosen password the researchers can download low res. images for layout purposes and can email the results of their search to International Photobank requesting the High Resolution Images they wish to use in the publication. There is a gallery of pictures, and keywords will find other similar subjects quickly. | Henk Wallays is a freelance nature photographer specialising in salamanders, newts, gymnophiona and more recently in Belgian/European insects. His images carry proper scientific name tags. The collection currently holds close to 1/3rd of the world salamander species and is build up through field expeditions (US, Europe) and shots made under captive conditions (e.g. Asian species), covering various critically endangered salamander species and life stages. His salamander photos and articles have been used in numerous (biology/scientific) books & magazines. Future projects include : extension of the European newts & insect sections, a new Californian salamander trip (next spring) and a tropical insect (macro)-trip to Costa Rica. Jana Birchum is a social documentary/reportage photographer based in Austin, Texas. Her extensive portfolio runs the gamut from hard news to in depth photo essays. She has recently completed a fun new photo story on the Texas Rollergirls, the founders of the new resurgence of Roller Derby in the United States. Roller Derby was invented as a form of entertainment during the Great Depression. Two teams of five skaters circle the rink, with each team sending out a "jammer" to skate around and lap members of the opposing team. It is a full-contact sport, with elbows flying, full body-checks and all-out fist fights. The new Roller Derby is a punk rock affair, with heavy metal bands at halftime, and plenty of all-girl skating action all the time. See the story on her new Digital Railroad site. | Paulo Backes specialises in landscape, flora and travel photography. Based in the Brazilian South, he has been working in art, editorial and advertising photography for 20 years. In the last few years he has worked in special editorial projects about trees and natural landscapes like Atlantic Rainforest and coastal region of Brazil, exotic trees cultivated in South America and its nature, including forest, grasslands (pampa) and the highlands of Argentina, Uruguay and the Brazilian south. Husband and wife team Robert and Justine of Papilio recently made a trip to Southern France, to photograph the fauna and flora of the Provence and Camargue regions. Hundreds of photos were taken of the bugs, insects, butterflies, flower meadows and birds and the amazing flamingoes of these two stunning areas. The Papilio web page now has over 4,000 searchable images, with hundreds being added weekly. The library is working through the off line collection and selecting highlights of nearly every species. However, if clients cannot find what they are looking for they should contact Justine or Robert and they can do a specific search and supply it digitally via e-mail or lightboxes.
