NEWSLETTER - JULY 2003

Photographers Direct's Fair Trade Photography model is gaining popularity with picture buyers frustrated by the lack of pricing flexibility with many big agencies. Photographers Direct has no set fees - buyers can quote the budget available to them and our photographers can individually decide if this is acceptable.

What could be fairer!

The database continues to grow rapidly with some 45,000 images now available online. If you cannot find what you need through the online search, then you can send out a Picture Search email request. This will be sent to photographers with relevant collections and they will upload images which fit your brief. No search fees, no hassle phoning round dozens of agencies, just a simple-to-acccess resource of more than 1,700 professional photographers. Give it a try!

Got Real? Capturing images of real people in real places having real adventures is the specialty of outdoor photographer Topher Donahue. As a world class mountain climber, Donahue has taken a photographic eye for the most striking images into some of the world’s most exotic and beautiful environments including; Patagonia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Alaska, Peru, Ecuador, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Europe.

His work is some of the hottest in the adventure industry at the moment because of the un-staged, raw, emotional style of his images. Like reality TV for still-life media, in a world where anything can be created on a computer, his work creates photographs that show the adventure behind the images. As well as climbing, his work covers kayaking, mountain biking, running, sailing, fishing, skiing, glassblowing, hiking and camping.

Having lived in Chicago almost his entire life, Lee Barry says he is still amazed by the stylistic contrasts in architecture there. Most of the time you find that architects really thought things through so that each new building is borne from the surrounding architectures.

His next photo essay will be on these architectural contexts, and how they work or don't work. Stay tuned...

Please also see his other architectural galleries, including his series on the Milwaukee Art Museum designed by Santiago Calatrava.
