Description: Sir David Wilkie (1785 – 1841) was a Scottish painter.In 1804, he began Pitlessie Fair (illustration), which includes about 140 figures, and in which he introduced portraits of his neighbours and of several members of his family circle. He was employed as a portraitist. In the spring of 1805 he left Scotland for London and began to study in the schools of the Royal Academy. Apart from his skill as a painter Wilkie was an admirable etcher.
