Description: Raindrops on Common Yellow Wood Sorrel , Oxalis stricta , called the common yellow woodsorrel , common yellow oxalis , upright yellow sorrel , lemon clover , or more ambiguously and informally sourgrass or pickle plant , is an herbaceous plant , a medium sized edible plant that occurs throughout most of North America . Oxalis means literally sour and is named as such due to its oxalic acid content . Wood sorrel is rich in Vitamin C . Historically , it was used to treat scurvy , fevers , urinary infections , mouth sores , nausea and sore throats . The plant , which is widely considered to be the plant that St . Patrick used to demonstrate the Trinity to the ancient Irish , is distinguished by its clover like leaves , arranged alternately along the stem , divided into 3 heart shaped leaflets .
