Meskel is one of the important religious holidays of the Ethiopian orthodox church . It is commemorating the finding of the true cross by the queen and saint Helena ( eleni ) in the year 326 . It is said that Helena had a revelation during a dream how she can find the true cross . She should make a fire and the smoke will show her the place , where she will find the cross . Each year this is celebrated by having a huge bonfire called Demera .
