The Battle of Mohacs marked the end of the kingdom of Hungary and opened up Central europe for the conquest by the ottoman empire , which ended near Vienna . The battle cost the life of about 24000 soldiers . According to the order of Suleyman , his troops made no prisoners . This battle is a national myth for all Hungarians . The monument was buildt in 1976 on the battlefield according to a design of Gyoergy Vadasz . Hungarian Kopjafa , traditional carved grave markers , form the center of the monument . Each kopjafa , all made by different artists , has its own design and symbolism . They remind the visitor of the cruelty of war and the atrocities of the battle .
