Description: Napoleon Bonaparte ( 1769 – 1821 ) , rose to prominence as a general of the French Revolution . In 1799 , Napoleon staged a coup détat and installed himself as First Consul ; five years later he crowned himself Emperor of the French . After many military successes he was forced to abdicate in April 1814 and was exiled to the island of Elba . Less than a year later , he returned to France , regaining control of the government prior to his final defeat at Waterloo in June 1815 . Napoleon spent the last six years of his life under British supervision on the island of Saint Helena .
