My name is Maria Gaellman. I was born in Sweden and fulfilled one of my dreams in 2006 when I moved to Scotland. I had fallen in love with the Scottish various landscapes & history a long time ago and I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to fulfill my dream. I love to capture the beauty around us with the focus on (no pun intended) landscapes, wildlife and heritage. At age 15, I was given my own camera. Over the years my love for photography has grown into more than just a hobby. I started to be serious about photography in 2010, when I met my partner. I have had the privilege to having some of my photographs published on various websites and in newspapers; I have also been lucky in a few photography competitions. Thank you for taking the time to visit my profile & viewing my work.

Having cut my teeth in high speed action photography such as World Rally Championship and international snowboarding events I have diversified in recent years to general commercial stock and informal portraiture.

I am used to travelling extensively for assignments and have found the traditional skills of action photography such as catching the moment, panning, motion blur and slow synch flash to have served me well in my other wider work. This has manifested itself in some of my more contemporary portraiture. I also enjoy taking images that tell the story of an event or occassion in the details as well as the more general 'obvious' shots.

Years of experience in Event, Wedding, Portrait, live theatre and music, and headshot photography. I particularly enjoy capturing natural light in cities at dusk and at night, seeing the abstract in the everyday. I love the way the variety of shades and colours of light become apparent in a naturally lit shot - contrasts of colours on different sides of the face or angles of buildings. I also love to find the fascinating geometries and shapes that exist in nature and cities right before our eyes, that aren't so apparent until captured in that frame, angle, and crop.

I began photographing Scotland’s beautiful landscapes and seascapes around 2007 in earnest, shortly after purchasing my second DSLR. As well as landscapes I am also passionate about photographing birds, wildlife and night photography.

I like my photographs to look as natural as possible and the way the camera recorded them, therefore I keep post-processing in the digital darkroom to a minimum. I do, however like to experiment with ND and GND filters to increase exposure time in daylight for cloud movement and to smooth out water.

I currently use a Canon 5dMKII for all my landscape work and a Canon 50d for wildlife. Lenses include a Canon 17-40mm f4.0 L, Canon 70-200 f4.0 L and a Canon 400mm f5.6 L. I also use various filters manufactured by Hoya and Lee.
